6 weeks have flown

Hard to believe the 6 weeks is up and race day is almost here. Its been an exciting, difficult and emotional journey to this point.

Monday - Bike 60 min - Negative Split. So as with previous weeks I started on my usual bike route. I ended up doing 27km in 69mins.

Tuesday - Run 30 mins. The weather really picked up today and the heat was stifling to say the least. I went out straight after work, started with a warm up and stretch first. Got into a nice pace and did 4.31km in 27mins 55secs. Since starting 6 Weeks to Try I'm really happy my running has improved.

Wednesday - Swim. I enjoyed tonights swim as it too has come along nicely. Again I was lucky enough to have a lane to myself so was able to concentrate on what was on the schedule.

Thursday - Rest Day. Friday - Swim or Cycle or Run. I chose cycling for today as I feel its my strongest discipline. I did 17.81km in 45min 7secs.

Saturday - Run and Cycle - Brick Session. There was no let up with the heat today. I didn't record distances but I stuck to the schedule and did the 50 minutes and practiced the transition at home for good measure.

Sunday - I went for a run only today. 4.27km in 27mins 01sec. I would like to thank the TriAthy team for selecting me and for the knowledge I have gained. As I said before, I never thought I would be doing anything like this ever since my injury but here I'am. Good luck to my other TryAthletes, we're nearly there!

keeping up the good work

Monday - Bike 50 Min. This week my route hasnt changed as i find it has everything i need. A couple of tasty up hills, some gradual climbs and fast straights. Despite the bad weather and wet roads i managed 18.79km in 48mins 05secs. So just under 50 minutes on the schedule. I'm really enjoying the bike, so far i feel its my strongest discipline.

Tuesday - Run 20 min. I went to the gym and used the treadmill for my run. I started off on a slow jog to warm up for 5 minutes then increased the pace and also the gradient slightly. I got into a nice stride and had a comfortable run, well pleased.

Wednesday - Swim. This session was a killer! I stuck with the 1,2,3,4,5 ladder. I didnt go flat out as i usually do when i start swimming, i slowed everything down and totally concentrated on my form and breathing. It was a tough swim session but at the same time very satisfying when it was completed.

Thursday - Run and Cycle - Brick Session. I started setting the bike up the drive way then put my helmet on and ran to the bike. I'm not too hot with the mount and dismount on a road bike so i played it safe and got on it while it was static. Again i just stuck to the usual bike route so i made sure i would have jelly legs. I dismounted the bike about 20 metres from the house and ran beside the bike to mimc the transition area. When i started the run my legs were like jelly for sure but it soon left. Another tough session.

Friday - Rest Day.

Saturday - Swim and Run - Brick Session. This was a nice session for the end of the week and the swim and run were easy enough. The main thing for me with todays training was basically being prepared to make the transition from swim to run. It was quick as i didnt have a wetsuit to contend with but i pick it up this week so i'll be practicing getting out of it once i do.

Sunday - Cycle 40 mins. Well another Sunday meant another hangover after a great night out with my girlfriend. However i still got out on the bike that afternoon with my friend David. It was a nice day for training, kept at an easy pace as it was a recovery session after all. Cured the hangover no end. That was a tough weeks training and its sometimes hard to get motivated after a day at work or if the weather is bad but it so rewarding. We're nearly there everyone so keep up the good work.

well chuffed

Monday - Rest Day

Tuesday - Bike. This week i stuck to the same route although i managed to add a little bit onto the route. Its challenging enough with two of the roads having strong head winds and a couple of steep hills to negotiate. I'm really happy with my cycling and i seem to be getting the most enjoyment from it. My distance and time for this was 18.02km in 46mins 23secs.

Wednesday - Run. My running route is pretty much flat which i am able to run at a comfortable steady pace. I cant stress enough the need to cool down and stretch after running as it is much needed. My distance and time were 4.42km in 28mins 24secs

Thursday - Swim. I was disappointed with todays swim as i didnt feel as strong as previous sessions but my technique has improved. I still managed 16 lengths but broke them up into 2 lengths at a time with a minute or so break in between. Friday - Rest Day

Saturday - Unofficial Rest Day. I took the day off training because to be honest i was hungover lol. I had a night out with my girlfriend and friends so i allowed myself to be able to miss a day.

Sunday - Cycle/Run Brick Session. Well after an early night on Saturday and a good sleep i was well up for this brick session. Cycle wise nothing changed as i stuck to my usual route which i clocked up 17.78km in43mins 55secs. After a quick-ish 'transition' i started off on my run. Again i stuck to my previous route. My legs were a bit wobbly at first but once i found my rhythm i started to enjoy it. My distance and time for the run was 4.24km in 26mins 35secs. This brick session was tough but at the same time enjoyable and i was on a high when i finished. Well chuffed.

The weeks are flying in to race day so everyone keep up the good work. You are all doing brilliant.

Back in the Saddle

Well one week down, five to go.

Monday - Training started with running and went ok. I have a moderate level of fitness but running was never a big thing for me after the injury so I always stuck to non impact exercises. I have to say it was good getting back at it.

Tuesday - Rest day. This involved some stretching and doing some research online into transitions, breathing when swimming etc.

Wednesday - Cycling. I went to the gym for this and had no real issue with it as cycling was always part of my regular workout. Looking forward to getting out on the roads.

Thursday - Swimming. I can swim no probs and managed 14 lengths within the 15 minutes. I concentrated on bi lateral breathing which I've never tried before but once I got the hang of it, it helped a lot.

Friday - Brick Session, swim and run. Today was supposed to be a rest day but I thought I would keep the momentum with the swimming going. I managed 16 lengths this time then got out and quickly changed for the run. My legs were heavy starting the run but my own fault for not stretching well enough. Apart from that it went very well.

Saturday - Rest Day. I did just that and chilled out.

Sunday - Cycle. Out on the road for the first time. It went well, obviously different from a static bike in a gym but I enjoyed it. I took the time to familiarise myself with the bike also as I will be using it on race day.

I have to say my training is going great and I'm feeling great and I have an inspiration to do well. Keep up the good work everyone, you are all doing awesome.

hope after injury

Hey all

I'm Gareth, one of those lucky enough to be chosen for TryAthy. This time last year I wouldn't have considered going for a jog let alone do a triathlon. I was overweight and coming of the back of a serious ankle and leg injury playing rugby 3 years previous. Then last September I decided to make a change so I joined a slimming class and started to exercise again. Best decision in a long time. I was at TriAthy in 2010 as a spectator with my friend Dave as his wife Geri was competing in it. It has taken me this long to make it back down again but this time I'm taking part and I can't wait! Try is the name of the game but I have set myself a personal goal. There is hope after an sporting injury and I hope I'm proof of that. Good luck to all the other TryAthletes, see you all at the starting line.
